The Punch Bowl

A member of the iconic fleet dating back to 1873, Nicholson's offers timeless British pub hospitality. A fine stock of smooth and silky cask ales are pulled at the bar, while homely British classics are served in the dining room. The carefully chosen wine list brings together some great international bottles, while a Cask Ale Club is offered for any true beer aficionados. Our cask ale club has been updated and is now a downloadable app for Apple and Android users. A free download which will get you a pint of our own Nicholson's Pale Ale or a gin and tonic for just £1. The app also has other benefits and features, ask a team member if you need help with downloading the app or setting up your account. Our speciality dishes are our pies, we have a changing menu including a steak, ale and mushroom pie, chicken, ham hock and cheese and our vegan lentil cottage pie. The building has been a pub since the 1600's and has history linking it to the Wigs political party and has once been a brothel. The pub has suffered 2 fires in the front bar, one of them claiming the life of a former landlord who was trapped in the cellar. The pub also has at least 1 other ghost, a girl called Isabella who was murdered in what is now the staff room. The team are more than happy to tell you about the sightings they, or other members of staff and the public have experienced. We have a cosy snug around the back of the bar which is perfect for parties or a nice cosy drink to get away from the hustle and bustle of the streets of York. We look forward to welcoming you.
